Tidy up

Snap what you played to the grid, and take the sequencers onto Live's Arrangement timeline.

Quantize

Notes played on the pads land a little off the beat. Hold Shift in the drum layout, the melodic layout or the melodic sequencer, and the same buttons tidy them up.

1 Scene button 2Record quantize on / off: notes you record land on the grid (red = on)
2 Scene button 3Quantize the clip: every note moves to the grid
3 Scene button 4Quantize the selection: the selected drum pad, or the amber keys of the melodic sequencer
4 Clip Stop 1–8The grid: 1/32, 1/16T, 1/16, 1/8T, 1/8, 1/4 (the two dark ones can't quantize)
  • red: record quantize on
  • turquoise: quantize the clip
  • sky blue: quantize the selection
  • dark grey: record quantize off
Try this

Play a beat on the drum pads with the clip recording, then Shift + scene button 3: the notes snap, the pads say .

Tip

Notes always move all the way to the grid. A dark button means there is nothing to quantize: no MIDI clip, or a clip still recording.

The Arrangement view

Both sequencers also work on Live's timeline. Press Tab in Live for the Arrangement: the pads edit the clip under the playhead on the selected track and switch to the next clip as the song plays through them. Live's Detail view follows along.

Between clips

Nothing to edit, so the steps are empty. Press a step anyway and a new one-bar clip appears at that bar, with your note in it.

Stopped

Move Live's insert marker onto a clip to edit it. Page follow, the playing bar and the Gate view follow the arrangement playhead.

Duplicate on the timeline

Nudge + doubles the loop as always, and makes the clip longer on the timeline when it has to, so the doubled loop plays through once. A clip that's already long enough keeps its length.

Tip

A clip never grows into the next one, and one Shift+Clip/Dev View (undo) takes the whole thing back. The loop row changes the clip's loop only: drag the clip's end in Live to make it longer.

Heads-up

A clip with automation envelopes is only duplicated, not lengthened: lengthen it in Live. The status bar tells you.
